The first Inter-Livery Ski Championships took place in 2010 and has gained momentum every year since to become one of the most popular events in the Livery Companies annual calendar.
The championships provide the perfect opportunity for any Livery member to represent their company in a unique ski event, which not only raises significant funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and Snow Camp as the official charity partner, but offers a truly memorable experience for approximately 300 attendees year-on-year.
The Inter-Livery Ski Championships is designed to be informal, great fun, and set in the beautiful backdrop of the Alps. Whether as a competitor or spectator, it is a wonderful opportunity for all Livery Companies to come together – to ski, to connect, and to share in the transformative power of giving back.
Just over 10 years ago, Snow Camp Founder Dan Charlish was honoured to receive the Freedom of the City of London at a ceremony at the Guildhall. It was a special day for Snow Camp to have the charities work recognised in this way, alongside three other recipients on the day, including Ben Fogle.
Following the Freedom of the City ceremony, it introduced Snow Camp to the world of Livery Companies, and their history, impact and importance; the oldest of which was founded in the 12th century as traders formed guilds and sought royal approval to buy and sell their goods in the City of London.
Over 100 Livery Companies still exist today, giving an astonishing £75 million to charities each year. After the Guildhall ceremony, Snow Camp began applying to various companies for grants to support our work – benefitting from support from the Leathersellers, the Salters, the Drapers, the Dyers, the Merchant Taylors, the Ironmongers, the Tallow Chandlers, the Haberdashers and more.
And then, following a meeting with Snow Camp supporter and Leatherseller Antony Barrow, we discovered there was an Inter-Livery Ski Championships (ILSC) held each year in Morzine! Over 200 skiing (and very occasionally snowboarding) participants, representing nearly 40 different Livery companies, all come together to race, enjoy the mountains together and support the Lord Mayors Fund.
With the support of Christopher Hudson, Snow Camp began attending. Firstly, in a small way just to meet people, to explain the charity and understand the event, then slowly with a bigger team and some young people from Snow Camp who were invited to share their stories. We began delivering some fun challenges at the event; very much embraced by the livery companies, with fundraising for Snow Camp at the centre of the activities.
The 2025 event marked Snow Camp’s 7th year in attendance as the Charity Partner.
In 2019 and 2020, Snow Camp delivered a fun Team Distance Challenge where teams of 4 would ski as many kilometers as they could within a set time, with awards given to those who skiied the furthest distance.
Following a pause during the pandemic, and wanting to add further variety to the event, Snow Camp have proudly delivered the ILSC Team Triathlon for Snow Camp ever since; with teams of 4 taking on a giant slalom, biathlon challenge and snowshoe hike, with points awarded for speed and accuracy.
In 2023, the ILSC event raised over £35,000. This funding supported essential Snow Camp programmes, including our First Tracks programme and mental health training workshops. Over 28 teams of 4 took on the 2023 Team Triathlon, with the Mercers taking home the overall victory and the Barbers leading in fundraising efforts.
Building on this momentum, the 2024 event raised an incredible £57,000, with 116 participants forming 29 teams. The Haberdashers Mountain Goats clinched the title, while the Goldsmiths led the fundraising leaderboard. Snow Camp Apprentices Milana and Bobby took to the stage to share their Snow Camp stories, with a few tears in the room given how far they’ve come since first stepping on snow on the Snow Camp Scotland programme.
Inter-Livery Ski Championships Co-Director Emma Halford-MacLeod said: “It is a joy and privilege for the Inter-Livery Ski Championships to partner with Snow Camp and raise funds to help more young people. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Milana and Bobby in Morzine last week, who were both so brave in telling their stories in front of 270 strangers. Two very inspirational young people who are both capable of great things.”
Dan Charlish, Founder & Director of Snow Camp, said: “We couldn’t be more grateful for the support of everyone who attended the 2024 event, and of course to everyone who took on our triathlon with such passion and enthusiasm. We always have such a wonderful experience being part of this fantastic event. Livery companies are so supportive of our work and are equally competitive about fundraising – a perfect combination! Huge thanks to Emma and Marc for all the organising and support.”
New for 2025, in partnership with ESF, Morzine Tourism and Indiana Ventures, we once again ran our Triathlon event, only this time adding on the Snow Camp Curling Challenge as our 4th activity alongside our Après Drinks in the evening. Hosted at the Outdoor Ice Rink in the heart of Morzine, the Curling Challenge was a roaring success, with 4 teams gaining the maximum 10-bonus points available thanks to their poise and accuracy when throwing their stones down the ice.
And as for the winner this year, it came down to one single curling stone, between the Grocers and the Salters. It couldn’t have been closer!
The 2025 event raised a staggering £55,000 for Snow Camp’s work with young people across the UK – testament to the generosity, camaraderie and support from every attendee. With our 3 young people (Amirra, Charlotte and Daveena) sharing their heartfelt stories on stage, whilst acknowledging the incredible support this unique partnership has generated, the 2025 event really will go down as one to remember by all. A special mention also to The Haberdashers who raised an incredible £10,460.00 – therefore winning the highest fundraisers award.
The partnership between Snow Camp and the ILSC has extended far beyond the slopes of Morzine. With countless relationships and friendships nurtured, the overall support from the community ensures we can deliver high-quality and fully-accredited programmes all year-round; enabling young people to access new opportunities, build essential life skills, improve their confidence and mental-wellbeing, whilst accessing snowsports and the mountain environment which simply wouldn’t be possible otherwise.
The ILSC’s support doesn’t just benefit Snow Camp participants – it also strengthens the communities they return to. Young people leave the Snow Camp programmes with new qualifications, raised aspirations, and leadership skills, making them role models in their schools, families, and local communities.
To date, our partnership with the Inter-Livery Ski Championships has collectively raised over £200,000 for Snow Camp’s work through these annual events in Morzine, whilst also helping the charity raise its profile and find new supporters and funders from those attending.
Dan Charlish said, ‘It’s hard to put into words how important Livery Company support for Snow Camp has been. This wonderful event has helped us raise funds that have changed many young lives; we have met many new partners and supporters who now back our work and perhaps most importantly we have made many new friends across the Livery movement, who believe in what we do and have become part of the Snow Camp community. It is a wonderful example of pan-Livery collaboration and we are so grateful for all the support’
After an incredible 15 years in Morzine, the Inter-Livery Ski Championships now turns its attention to Mayhofen in Austria – with new terrain, new challenges, new relationships, and of course new and exciting additions to the Snow Camp challenge – firmly in the planning.
We look forward to seeing all our friends in Austria for what promises to be an exceptional year for the Inter-Livery Ski Championships.
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Livery Companies for their continued support. Their generosity and enthusiasm inspire everyone at Snow Camp and make a real difference in the lives of young people. Thank you all!
